   Meditations from the Study

The LORD can alter any state of despair if we simply turn to Him. How can we respond in times of hopelessness? The Psalmist in Psalm 119: 25-32 gives four steps that lead to a proper response.

I. The First Step is to be Honest with the LORD about Your Condition (vv.25a, 26a, 28a).
   A. Convey to the LORD your state of mind (v.25a)
   B. Convey to the LORD your inner feelings (v.28a)
   C. Convey to the LORD your manner of living (v.26a)

II. The Second Step is to direct the proper petitions before the LORD (v.25b, v.26b, v.27a, v.28b, v.29).
   A. Rejuvenate me with life through Your Word (v.25b)
   B. Instruct me in Your expectations (v.26b)
   C. Illuminate my understanding of the way of Your directions (v.27)
   D. Support me with Your spoken Word (v.28b)
   E. Clear away deceit from my person and give me Your law (v.29)

III. The Third Step is to Establish the Right Commitments (vv.30, 31)
   A. Determine to honor God in your choices (v.30)
   B. Determine to move closer to God in your associations (v.31)

IV. The Fourth Step is to Reach the Right Conclusion (v.32).
   A. The believer is to exert labor in pursuing God’s pleasure
   B. God operates through the believer to produce His pleasure

When we trudge through a valley of despair we can be assured that LORD will alter our state of hopelessness if we follow the Psalmist’s example. A proper response in a time of despair entails four steps: Be honest with the LORD about your condition, direct the proper petitions to the LORD, establish the right commitments, and reach the right conclusion.
