May 2003
|

Greetings! In the second quarter of 2003 we have seen a number of startling events: the international epidemic of SARS, American soldiers sacrificing their lives for our national freedom, and a wave of turbulent weather sweeping the Midwest and South. Simply reading about these global, national, and regional crises can be unsettling.
But traumatic circumstances become most disturbing when they reach our own doorstep. Maria Woods, the 38-year-old young lady featured in the last newsletter, experienced such a crisis. Near the end of January, Maria received news from her physician that she had only a few days to live. Instead of being shaken by her mortality, Maria exhibited remarkable composure. Several days later, on Jan. 23, 2003, Maria departed this world. Maria’s example encourages us that we need not fear, even, the end of this life. Maria died the way she lived most of her life, secure in a relationship with her Savior and Master, Jesus Christ. If Maria were writing us today, I’m certain she would ask: “Is your trust properly anchored in the Lord?”

Summer Time
|
|   |
In Feb. eleven of us enjoyed several selections of special music, a wonderful inspirational video, and a delicious lunch at Tim Mahler’s home.
We left encouraged with the thought that our chances to serve Him are rapidly fleeting.
|
The past few months have been busy for all of us. Many in our group have been active with work, school, and mission trips. We pray that you will not forget the Lord this summer and we anticipate sharing your fellowship at our next meeting.

Rolling on a Paved Road
|
|   |
Mr. Bradley O’ Dell has been wheeling around Greenville for the past fifteen years. Twelve of those years he was President of the Palmetto Wheelchair Sports Association. When it comes to wheelchairs and sports in the Upstate, Bradley O’ Dell is the trademark. Although Bradley has been rolling on wheels for forty years and has reached “senior” status (a youthful looking 66 years) he is showing no signs of slowing down.
You can catch a glimpse of him at the Greenville Braves Stadium collecting tickets or ushering fans to their seats. You may also spot him at Easter Seals repairing wheelchairs, at the local nursing home visiting a friend, or at Sunset Park in Mauldin supporting the wheelchair softball team. How can this gentleman be so productive as a paraplegic?
In reiterating his own mileage log on wheels, Bradley states, “I have done everything I wanted to do, except run, walk, and kick a football but I do not want to pay a $100.00 for a pair of Nikes to do that.” Not only is his sense of humor intact, but Bradley also believes that it is essential to leave life’s navigation in the hands of the Lord. At age eleven, Bradley began to put his trust in God’s Son to plot his course. Bradley believes that the roadmap of his entire life has been an interconnected pattern of God’s grace.
Bradley even views his 1962 car “accident”, which permanently paralyzed him from the chest down, as God’s intervention in his life. He was attempting to chart his own direction when the Lord graciously turned his life back on the right course. Here is a man on wheels who states from his own experience: “All things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28). While Bradley continues to roll along God’s road for his life, he is daily exhibiting strength through faith in Jesus Christ.
If you have the privilege of crossing paths with Bradley O’ Dell, you may want to ask him about his new Xtreme sport—the “Paris Mountain para tumble”.
